Customs Junior Officers Training winds down

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, March 21st, 2012 (Customs PRO)   -  24 Junior Officers of the Customs and Excise Department are near completing the 8th Annual Caribbean Customs Law Enforcement Council (CCLEC) Basic Training Course which certifies Customs Officers in the areas of Tax Regimes and Border Security.

     

    This course was officially started on Sunday January 29, 2012 by Prime Minister, Rt. Hon Dr. Denzil Douglas and continued over an eight week period covering topics such as Customs Legislation, Customer Service, Risk Management, Classification, Border Security, Maritime/ISPS Awareness, Vehicle Search, Role of Canine Unit, Diplomatic and Consular Rights and Privileges, and Conflict Management, among others.

     

    The course formally ends on Monday March 26, 2012 with a closing ceremony at the Customs and Excise Headquarters in Bird Rock, starting at 4:30 pm. The successful Officers will be promoted to the rank of trained officer, the equivalent of two and a-half bars.

     

    O.A.S. Representative to St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Starret Greene will be the featured speaker and will address the gathering of government and Customs officials, the graduates, their families and other specially invited guests.

     

    The Closing Ceremony will include addresses by Prime Minister Douglas who will bring brief remarks on behalf of the Ministry of Finance, Comptroller of Customs Rodney Harris and a Course Review by Assistant Comptroller of Customs with responsibility for Training, Mr. Theodore Brown.

     

    The twenty-four (24) participants include trainees from both the St. Kitts and Nevis divisions of the Customs and Excise Department and along with members of the Montserrat Customs and Revenue Service.

     

    CCLEC Junior Officers Training began was first undertaken in the Federation in 1997 and were conducted in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2010. This year’s training was held under the World Customs Organization’s 2012 theme “Borders Divide. Customs Connect.”
