BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – MORE than 20 employees of the St. Kitts Marriott Hotel’s House Keeping Department staged a protest this morning [June 14] in an effort for management to reinstate one of their colleagues who was recently sacked.

According to informed sources, the house-keepers had protested outside of the Human Resources Department from 9 a.m. until sometime after noon today.

“Over 20 workers of the House Keeping Department showed up for work this morning and decided to go on strike because one of their colleagues was fired a few days ago. The house-keeper was fired because an auditor said she stole US$40 from him,” one of the sources, on condition of anonymity, said.

The source stated that two weeks after leaving the premises, the auditor reported to management that the house-keeper, without his permission, had taken the US$40 from among his possessions in the Hotel and she was fired.

“If it were a fact that she had taken the money, why did he wait until two weeks after the incident before reporting it?” the source questioned, adding, “He claimed to have had more than what he said she took, and something does not seem right about that. Therefore, if we the workers can see something is wrong with his allegation, then why couldn’t management? Instead of firing her, an investigation should have been conducted and both parties thoroughly questioned by an expert.”

The source also noted that the employees had requested audience with the Director of the Human Resources Department and the Hotel’s Manager, and indicated they would have continued the protest if their request were not met. ~~Adz:Right~~

The source further noted that the Hotel’s Manager, David Khey, who was seemingly angry over the noise being made by the protesting workers, “had instructed Loss Prevention to call the Police, but I cannot say if any officer had arrived”.

“It has been over five years that house-keeper had been working at the Marriott Hotel and she has never been known to be a dishonest person,” another source said.

However, on arrival at the Marriott Hotel, SKNVibes contacted Marketing Director Simon Bell, who said the matter was resolved, the workers were back on the job and it was “back to business as usual”.

Bell also stated that management was not in a position to offer further comments at the time, but promised a statement would be made shortly.
