BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – ATHLETES of the Washington Archibald High School (WAHS) have their eyes fastened on the prize after completing the second day of the 2012 TDC Inter-School Championships with more gold and overall medals than any of the other schools.

Several activities were held at the Silver Jubilee Stadium as part of the second leg of the event including the inaugural U-15 heptathlon – consisting of seven events which participants were expected to complete.

The seven events which the female athletes participated in for the heptathlon were: the 60m race, high jump, shot put, 60m hurdle race, long jump, the cricket ball throw and the 1000m race.

Slightly different from the females, the males’ activities were: the 80m race, shot put, high jump, the 80m hurdle race, cricket ball throw, long jump and the 1200m race.

Setting the record for the U-15 Female heptathlon was Jakeishal Leader of the Charles E. Mills Secondary School (CEMSS) with 3 085 points.

And for the male category, the record was set by Aziel Smithen of the Cayon High School (CHS) with 3 823 points.

Other events which were completed yesterday (Mar. 24) as part of the championships include the 200m heats and finals, 800m finals, 200m finals, 300m U-17 hurdles finals, 3 000m and 5 000m finals male and female categories, the male and female U-20 long jump, the U-23 male discus and the U-20 male shot put.

The day ended with WAHS gaining 28 medals – 10 gold, nine silver and nine bronze medals. Their closest rivals were the Basseterre High School (BHS) with 22 medals; six gold, 11 silver and five bronze medals. With 19 medals, Cayon High School (CHS) stood in third position, having received three gold, 11 silver and five bronze.

Verchilds High School (VHS) followed up with 17 medals - nine gold, three silver and five bronze. The CEMSS followed closely with 15 medals in bag; nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

The Charlestown Secondary School tied with CEMSS in overall medals, they won less first places but gained more second and third places. They amassed five gold medals, three silver and seven bronze.

The Clarence Fitzroy Bryant College ended the second day of the competition with 11 medals (two gold, four silver and five bronze), Gingerland Secondary School won one gold, one silver and three bronze medals and Saddlers Secondary School won one silver and one bronze.

The Advanced Vocational Education Centre (AVEC) ended that day with one bronze medal.

SKNVibes understands that as many as 17 records were broken between the first and second day of the championships. And the action continues today where a host of other events will take place.

Will last year’s champs – WAHS – successfully defend their title? This question will be answered In a matter of hours.
