Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, March 23rd, 2012  –  The Ministry of Education will be honouring 38 students during the annual National CXC Awards scheduled for March 30 at the Montserrat Cultural Centre.

The National CXC Awards Programme was initiated in 2003 from a recommendation by the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) that Ministries of Education of territories that write the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations celebrate the achievements of students who successfully sit the May/June session each year.

“The premise for the recommendation is that the acknowledgement of students’ performance will motivate them to pursue excellence in future aspirations, and at the same time, serve as an incentive to those students coming behind to not settle for mediocrity,” says Ms Yasmine White, Education Officer responsible for curriculum and exams.

A total of 38 candidates will be receiving awards, 11 from 2010 and 27 from 2011.  “The numbers have increased noticeably because we have expanded the awards to include those who received five or more subjects,” Ms White confirmed.

Last year 54 candidates from MSS wrote the CSEC May-June examinations of which 25 will receive an award at the ceremony next week.

The criteria for determining the awardees are stipulated by CXC, although territories can now make adjustments.  Consequently, the Ministry of Education (MoE) has included a Caribbean Advance Proficiency Examination (CAPE award) and this year, for the first time, a Caribbean Certificate of Secondary Level

Competence (CCSLC) award.  The awards are as follows:

    • Most Outstanding Performance in Humanities

    • Most Outstanding Performance in Business Education

    • Most Outstanding Performance in Technical & Vocational subjects

    • Most Outstanding Performance in the Sciences

    • Overall Outstanding CSEC Student

    • Overall Outstanding CAPE Student

    • Overall Outstanding CCSLC Students

    • 5 subject passes

    • 6 subject passes

    • 7 subject passes

    • 8 or more subject passes

Since the commencement of the awards programme, recipients were given trophies and monetary prizes. This year, the Ministry is unable to give monetary prizes and so, the awards are limited to trophies and medals.
