WADA Praises Antigua And Barbuda For Its Commitment To The Fight Against Anti-Doping

    ST.JOHN'S Antigua, March 26th, 2012  --   The Director of the Latin American Regional Office of the World Anti-Doping Agency(WADA), Ms. Maria Jose recently extended congratulations and gratitude to Antigua and Barbuda for once again demonstrating its commitment to the gloobal fight against doping in sports.

     

    This came in response to the Government's early submission of its contribution to WADA for the 2012 financial year.
     
    Sen. Hon. Winston Williams Jr., Minister of State with responsibility for sports expressed appreciation for the commendation and underscored his government's continued commitment to supporting efforts to maintain an environment which promotes fair play in sports which by necessity requires regular injections of funding to provide a level playing field for all athletes including our own elite squad demonstrate their true talent without unnatural enhancements. 

     

    According to Minister Williams, he has been spearheading efforts with the Ministry of Finance to bring outstanding payments from 2002 up to date since his appointment as Minister of State with responsibility for Sports in his first term of office.

     

    The Minister of State also shared that the Government of Antigua and Barbuda has already submitted payments of over twenty-one thousand US dollars in subscriptions to WADA.

     

    The remaining three years of outstanding subscriptions are expected to be paid over time while maintaining current with future subscriptions.

     

    The payments made to date are as follows:
     
    2002 -  Paid on 23-Jun-11  US$ 1,972
    2003 -  Paid on 23-Jun-11   US$ 2,347
    2004 - Outstanding US$ 2,347
    2005 - Outstanding US$2,517.78
    2006 - Outstanding US$2,593.31
    2007 - Paid US$2,671.11
    2008 - Paid on 28 July 2008 US$ 2,778.00
    2009 - Paid 16-Nov-10  US$2,889.00
    2010 - Paid 16-Nov-10  US$3,005.00
    2011 - Paid 23-Jun-11  US$3,065.00
    2012 - Paid March 2012, US$3,065.00

     

    Presently, Antigua and Barbuda has benefited from its membership in WADA and boasts a number of highly qualified Doping Control Officers including our own Kristy Dickenson who has had the priviledge of working with WADA in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver and is also slated for assignment in the London Olympics in 2012. 

     

    The local agencies through which the work related to Anti doping in sports is conducted is the National Olympic Committee and the Sports Medicine Association.
