Today's monthly Press Conference, June 17 2008, held by the People's Action Movement (PAM), focused attention to the unresolved flaws in voter registration, as well as a number of other pertinent issues that now concern the people of St. Kitts and Nevis.
On the matter of voter registration, PAM Political Leader Mr. Lindsay Grant explained that a new system that leaves elderly citizens behind could not be said to hold integrity.
Mr. Grant shared the recent case of an 85 year-old woman who flagged him down in Godwin Ghaut on her way to confirm at the Half Way Tree registration centre.
When it turned out that she had already confirmed, her daughter's name in fact appeared twice on the voter list. Mr. Grant indicated that this error was immediately brought to the attention of Ms Cecilia Phipps who was the government employee in charge of the operation that day. ~~Adz:Right~~
In light of the PM's misleading remarks to Parliament on the matter, Mr. Grant challenged PM Douglas to tell the truth about the serious questions this case raises about the integrity of the reconfirmation process. Mr. Grant further invited PM Douglas to invoke the relevant electoral laws on the matter.
To conclude Mr. Grant challenged PM Douglas to tell the truth to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis on a number of other issues including: the status of compensation for civil servants, the grievances raised by the St. Kitts Nevis Royal Police Force, the collapse bridge at the West Basseterre By-Pass, the $300 promised to the factory workers prior to the last General Election and the multibillion dollar national debt that St. Kitts and Nevis has incurred under the Labour Government.
