ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, March 30th, 2012 – The Conservation and Fisheries Department has planned a week-long coastal cleanup along the coastlines of Baugher’s Bay, Brandywine Bay and Waterfront Drive on Tortola from April 16 - 20.
This coastal clean-up is among the activities planned in observance of Earth Day 2012 throughout the Territory. Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22 and will serve as the Territory’s environmental service activity for Earth Day 2012 which is being celebrated under the theme, ‘Mobilize the Earth’.
Acting Chief Conservation and Fisheries Officer, Mr. Kelvin Penn told the Department of Information and Public Relations, “Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth’s natural environment”.
Mr. Penn continued, “We at the Department join in on observing this year’s Earth Day as we send a message to the community to mobilize the earth from the ground up. As a people, we must take an active role in the preservation of our environment and do whatsoever possible to protect our natural environment.”
“Earth Day is every day, so let us work together and better care for our natural environment. This year we are more focused on embracing new methods to strategically embrace change and speak with one voice, one message,” Mr. Penn expressed.
The Department cordially invites all interested civic groups, schools, churches, businesses, volunteers and the wider community to register with the Department and support the coastal cleanup as the Department strives to maintain a well managed, protected and preserved environment for all residents and visitors in the Territory.
