BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEB. 15, 2005): Establishing a clear policy and cooperative environment were the aims of a meeting held today between the Government, the National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission and representatives of Telecommunications providers.
The meeting was called in response to several concerns and especially as a means of safeguarding the interest of stakeholders, as the telecommunications sector develops, explained Minister of State for Information and Technology, the Hon. Nigel Carty. Chairing the meeting, Minister Carty indicated that the policy for Telecoms infrastructure development will address, among other things, the proliferation of communications towers throughout the Federation.
He indicated that the policy also addresses the need for desired engineering standards, civil aviation concerns and other safety issues. Representatives of the three licensed telecommunications providers, UTS CariGlobe, Cingular and Cable and Wireless welcomed the clarification and pledged to work collaboratively to achieve the policy objectives.
Presentations were also made by Mr. Chris McMahon, chairman of the NTRC; Mr Elis Hazel of the Planning Unit; Mr. Glen Dare of the NTRC; Mr. Wesley Wharton of the Information and Technology Unit; and Mr. Bernard Rawlins of the Civil Aviation Authority.
