    Mrs Yvette Liburd, Librarian

CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - LIBRARIAN at the St. George’s Branch Library, Yvette Liburd says plans are well on the way towards hosting an exciting yet educational library summer programme.

The venture, dubbed Annual Environmental Awareness Programme is in its 19th year.

According to Liburd, participants would be engaged in illustrated and interactive lectures and discussions, songs, art and craft exercises, field trips, drama, quizzes, research projects, cookery exercises, poetry and essay competitions and a song writing competition.

The theme for the programme is “Our country, our people, our future” but the activities will focus greatly on the sub-theme, “Reminiscing the past, relishing the present, charting the way forward”.

This year’s programme will feature topics such as the road to Independence, our Independence: national symbols and nation builders, our accomplishments since Independence and charting the way forward. ~~Adz:Right~~

Liburd advised that the overall objectives were the same as those in previous years, but those idiosyncratic to this year’s theme include creating an awareness of our struggles from slavery to independence, sensitising participants on the progress as an independent nation and encouraging, educating participants on the new developments and to solicit their contribution towards the future development of our country and developing national pride and patriotism among participants.

The summer sessions are geared towards children at both the primary and secondary school levels and will be held in three parts.

Secondary school participants aged 12 to 16 years will have their sessions at the Gingerland Public Library from July 7-11, 2008. Primary school students aged nine to 12 years and those aged five to eight years will meet at the Charlestown Secondary School for their sessions from July 14-18, 2008, and July 21-25, 2008 respectively.

The Librarian and other members of staff are calling on parents to have their registered for the programme. Registration can be done at the primary and secondary schools on the island as well as at the Gingerland and Charlestown Public Lbraries.
