BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE chip does not fall far from the block, and this maxim holds true in the Liburd’s family as another of its members recently had a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering conferred on him.

Information reaching SKNVibes state that Shannon Omari Liburd, son of Donna Simpkins and popular radio personality and show host Juni Liburd, graduated with Honours from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology [MIT] in Boston, USA.

Liburd received his degree in Engineering at the 142nd Commencement Exercises which took place at Killian Court at MIT, Boston on Friday, Jun 6, 2008.

The young Engineer was not alone on that special and memorable day; he was supported and congratulated by both of his parents, brother, sister, grandmother, aunts and a host of other relatives as well as friends.

According to his father, Liburd would be remaining at the MIT where he has a full scholarship to acquire his Master’s degree in Engineering, starting in September.

“I am proud of my son’s achievement and I had expected nothing less in his performance for the acquisition of his degree.

He had always demonstrated to us from a very early age that he is capable of achieving set goals, and, as it was during his formative years, he will receive all the necessary support required whilst undergoing studies for his Master’s degree,” Juni Liburd said.

It was also noted by one of Liburd’s former teachers that “the students who graduate from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology deserve our admiration. They are remarkable people, brilliant, thoughtful, creative, hardworking and passionate about making a positive difference”.

Shannon Omari Liburd graduated from high school in Brooklyn, New York in June 2004. He also has many achievements under his belt, including Youth Ambassador to Germany, the Ukraine and Japan; Member of the Arista/Archon Society; Student Representative New York City Council Project; and Representative of the Select Programme in Science and Engineering at City College, New York.

After completing the programme for Mastery in Engineering Studies at Houston University, the then 17-year-old Liburd was accepted by the MIT to study for the degree he now holds.

Shannon Omari Liburd comes from a long line of scholars, which include his father, his aunt – former Speaker of the National Assembly Marcella Liburd, and uncles Carl and the late Clarence Fitzroy Bryant.
