~~Adz:Left~~BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – JUAN ‘LALA’ FYFIELD was found guilty last Friday of a gun-related offence and sentenced to an eighth-year jail term at Her Majesty’s Prison with hard labour.

Fyfield was convicted of shooting Shane Degrasse in Carty Alley sometime after 4:00 p.m. on January 1, 2007.

According to evidence presented in the case, Fyfield approached Degrasse while he was at Carty Alley and shot him in the left side of his chest. He was taken to the Joseph N. France General Hospital where he was treated for his injuries.

Dr. Cameron Wilkinson, who rendered medical treatment to Degrasse while at the hospital, told the court that were it not for the timely surgical intervention, his injuries would have been life-threatening.

The prosecution called in excess of four witnesses while the defence called two, both of whom told the court that Fyfield was nowhere near Carty Alley at the time of the incident.

The six/man/six/woman jury however did not believe the testimonies of the two defence witnesses and, after deliberating for approximately one hour and 10 minutes, they unanimously found him guilty of the offence.

The mother of Fyfield’s two children, Rhondalee Audain, was brought in by the defence to speak to his character and how well he handles his paternal responsibilities.

Defence counsel, Marsha Henderson, asked the court to exercise leniency but Justice Alfred Redhead, who explained that an example must be set, sentenced Fyfield to eight years at Her Majesty’s Prison with hard labour.
