Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, April 4th, 2012  – The Government of the Virgin Islands recognises the critical importance of the construction industry to the economy; hence, they recently engaged in discussions with the Contractors Association of the Virgin Islands who presented issues impacting the local industry.

Premier and Minister of Finance Dr. the Honourable D. Orlando Smith, OBE told the Department of Information and Public Relations that the meeting was of vital importance as it addressed the immediate need for economic development.

“We were brainstorming, exchanging ideas and proposing ways in which both the Government and private sector can collaborate to develop the local construction industry to make it an even more viable economic sector.”

The meeting which was held last Wednesday in the Premier’s Office, included discussions on the cumbersome application process for developments, use of influence by expatriate companies to expand beyond original agreements, import of specialist skills directly by developer, allowance of external bidding on large public service projects and insufficient transparency in the tendering process for Government contracts. The group also proposed several solutions to issues presented.

Government continues to be in consultations with key industry stakeholders from various economic sectors to find creative ways to improve fiscal activity and boost the Territory’s economy. Additionally, the Government of the Virgin Islands continues to pride itself on building a ‘people Government’ through listening, collaboration, consultation and communication.
