Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  April 5th, 2012  – In an effort to increase efficiency and raise the level of customer service the Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding motorists of the licensing process.

DMV Commissioner, Ms. Lorna Christopher told the Department of Information and Public Relations that there is a strict licensing process that must be adhered to that will make vehicle licensing much easier. According to Ms. Christopher upon arriving at the DMV the first process that should be carried out is inspection.

Persons should go directly to the rear of the building, present valid original insurance documentation and the owner(s) driver’s license(s), to begin the licensing process. Persons are also reminded that the driver’s license should reflect the category or class vehicle that the person operates.

“If the vehicle passes inspection, the Inspection Officer will issue an inspection certificate which should be brought inside to an Accounts Officer for processing and should be accompanied by your insurance policy and a completed motor vehicle license application form.

Once all the necessary documents are submitted and licensing fees paid, a receipt will be given which should be taken back to inspection where at that time, the Officer will place the new sticker on the vehicle to finish the process,” Ms. Christopher explained.

The Commissioner added that if the vehicle did not pass inspection then the owner will be responsible to make the necessary repairs before returning to the DMV to begin the process again. Inspection paperwork will be given to the person indicating the failure of the vehicle.

During the inspection process Officers are looking to make sure that all light fixtures on your vehicle including head lights, the brake lights, and indicators, parking lights and license plates lights are functional and can be fully illuminated.

Windscreens, windows and mirrors must be clear and free of colour or tint. Tint in the excess of 35 percent on front windows and 20 percent on the back windows will not be permitted as it is against the law. In addition tires, mufflers, front and rare bumpers, horns, steering wheels, and windshield wipers, must be in good condition and properly affixed to the vehicle.

The Department of Motor Vehicles is committed to ensuring that all vehicles conforms to appropriate safety standards to enhance road traffic safety territory-wide.
