BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – A young man said to be of Kittitian parentage was charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend, which occurred in Tortola on March 16.

According to a press release from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force, the Major Crime Team charged 23-year-old Alcedo Tyson of Joe’s Hill with the murder of 20-year-old Kwanna Todd-Rhymer on March 17.

The BVI News reported that it was revealed during his arraignment on March 19 that he shot Todd-Rhymer twice; first in her neck and after she fell to the ground he shot her a second time in her abdomen.

The incident occurred at Baugher’s Bay sometime after 4:00 a.m. when the deceased was leaving Dueces Night Club with her friends.

The report stated that Senior Crown Counsel Christilyn Benjamin told the court that the 20-year-old deceased and the defendant were involved in an intimate relationship that ended last year.

Todd-Rhymer worked at Delta Gas Station on March 15 from 3:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. and at about 1:00 a.m. on March 16 she went with her cousin to Paula’s Bar in Baugher’s Bay before arriving at the Night Club at 3:00 a.m.

The police release also stated it is understood that there were a number of people around when Todd-Rhymer was killed and they have been grateful with the public’s assistance so far.

Todd-Rhymer, a native of Dominica, had been residing in the BVI since 2006 and at, her funeral service on March 31, Delta Petroleum's General Manager Bevis Sylvester revealed that an award will be named in her honour.

The BVI Platinum reported that Sylvester said although she has gone home, her name would live on forever within the Delta family. And as such, they are in the process of honouring her by naming the award for the Most Outstanding Customer Attendant for each quarter after Rhymer.

The Kwanna Todd-Rhymer Customer Service Award will be the highest customer service award within the company, both locally and regionally, the General Manager.

At the funeral service, her brother Dexter Todd read the eulogy and she was described as a loving, down to earth, cheerful and enthusiastic person.

He said: "Kwanna was the type of young lady that would not make herself heard before seen; however, it was always the other way around. Though she knew she had the looks of an angel, she never acted like it; that's what kept her beauty going. She loved to enjoy herself. One day her best friend Amika asked her if she ever gets sad or upset. Her response was, 'Mama all the time, but you will never know because life is too short'."

Todd stated that his sister loved adventure and also loved her family and hanging out with her friends. He said she wanted to become a lawyer.
