SPIRIT Game Night filled with fun and laughter

Winner of Family Feud 2012 - The Demin Family
By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - SPIRIT promised the night would be one of fun and laughter and indeed it was. It was the first event after the official opening of Black San Bang-a-Lang which took place last Thursday (Apr. 5) at Sandy Point.

The night featured two popular, family oriented games shows, one in which individuals competed to win RAMs sponsored prizes and in the other, families competed for a grand prize of EC$3 000.

The ‘Price is Right’ and ‘Family Feud’ were the games of the night and they were mirrored off  the actual TV game shows but - like all Black San' events - with a twist.

The Price is Right was the first game to be played and featured five persons from the audience who were called to the stage and were shown a product on which they placed a single bid.

The participant who offered a bid closest to the product's actual RAMs price without going over won the item and then moved on to play one of several mini "Pricing Games" for an additional and more substantial prize or group of prizes.

From there, audience members were called one by one to join the bidding crew for a chance to move on.

Pricing Games included "Most Expensive" where the participant was shown four products and had to arrange them in order of most expensive to least expensive.

Another Pricing Game was "The Clock Game" where the participant had to correctly guess the price of two products in 30 seconds or less in order to win a total of three prizes.

At the end of each round (of which there were two), three participants would have played Pricing Games and advanced to the Showcase Showdown where they spun a wheel of numbers and the person who got the closest to one dollar without going over advanced to the "Showcase".

The two individuals who made it to the Showcase were shown a number of items and they were asked to guess the price of products combined.

It was not only a 'battle of the females' but also adult versus child at the Showcase as one of the participants was a 12-year-old but, Tara [adult], having more shopping experience than her younger counterpart dominated the finale and won herself groceries valued at EC$145.

The second game of the night was Family Feud where families of five competed against each other to name the most popular responses to a survey question posed to 100 persons.

Contestants were given questions that had been answered by a recent survey. The questions were about what other people think is true.

A contestant's answer was considered correct if it was one of the survey's answers or equivalent. Points were given equal to the number of surveyed answers.

Some of the questions included "Name something you do during your lunch hour", "Name something that people time" (e.g. set a timer for), “What is a pet name that a husband would call his wife?", "Name a sound you cannot hear unless you are very quiet", and "Name a food whose aroma makes you hungry".

One interesting question that stood out was "Name something men do to impress women" to which one contestant replied "lie" which, to most of the audience's surprise, was one of the surveyed answers.

The game saw a total of eight families going through elimination rounds with the top two families - the Demming and Richardson families - moving on to play the actual game.

The two opposing family members "faced-off" to see which family would gain control of the questions. One family member would be called to a buzzer and the quickest hand to touch it would be given the first opportunity to guess the most popular answer to the question.

The members of that family then took turns giving answers.

A "strike" was given if a player gave an answer that was not on the board. If the family was able to reveal all the answers on the board before accumulating three strikes, that family won the round. Three strikes caused the family to lose control of the board, giving the other team one chance to steal the points.

After a round was won, remaining answers were revealed.

The Demming family dominated the Feud, knocking out the Richardson family in every round in the game and moved on to play Fast Money for a chance to win EC$3 000.

In Fast Money, one player of the winning family answers five surveyed questions after another was taken away and had their ears plugged thus eliminating any chances of them hearing the answers given.

The second player then had to answer the same questions with different answers.

At the end of the game the family had to gain a combined total of 200 points in order to reap the financial rewards.

Unfortunately, the Demming family only accumulated 115 points and walked away with EC$115.

The fun and excitement continued the following day (Apr. 6) with the Giant Malt & Ginseng Endurance Bike-a-thon, and the Black San' Drama Festival.
