J'Ouvert! Another successful Black San' event

By: Jenise Ferlance, SKNVibes

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - HUNDREDS of revellers from the Sandy Point community as well as from villages near and far came out in carnival style to jam through the streets of Sandy Point in celebration of Black San' J’Ouvert.

With drinks in hand and waistlines ready to move, persons attending the much-anticipated event lined the streets to ‘jump up' and ‘get on bad’ to the familiar tunes of the sweet Small Axe Band.

The main troupe at the community festival was ‘Bil Ah Vybz’ populated by many individuals in character outfits.

Some men were seen wearing nightgowns and fitted with wigs, while others wore Halloween masks to conceal their identity.

Some were also seen with buckets of paint bouncing through the crowd and painting anyone in their way. A number of persons completed their outfits with mime gloves.

A few scuffles took place throughout the street jam but members of the Security Force were on the scene to keep the peace and so no injuries were recorded.

The Carib Brewery-sponsored J’Ouvert kicked off at Romney Ground sometime after 7:00 a.m. and persons ‘jammed’ the Island Main Road down before making their way to Fahie's Street where the band came to a halt a little after 10:00 a.m. and entertained revellers in The Ghaut while the Wet Dung session took place.

The downpour of rain did not stop the officers of the Sandy Point Fire Department from 'dousing' the revellers with water as they flocked the area to wash away body paint as they bounced and sang along to the newly popularised Small Axe tune "Banana".

Upon completion of the Wet Dung, the jam session moved right along the road leading to Pump Bay where the band came to a final halt and entertained all until 11:30 a.m.

The fun continued with a Beach Bash where Tombstone International and DJ Six-a-Clack took over from Small Axe providing musical entertainment for the jammers well into the afternoon and evening as they cooled down from hours of non-stop jamming.

The Black San' events continue this Thursday (Apr. 12) with Island Xpressions Black San' Version at The Lantern, and then on the following evening with Black San' Avenue on 42nd Street.
