BASSETERRE, St. Kitts-STUDENTS of the Sandy Point Primary School were adjudged the champions of the 2nd ‘Know Your Country Primary School Quiz Contest’ and received their award last night in a special ceremony held at the Matheson House in Taylor’s Range.
The quiz competition was held in February of this year during the History & Heritage week of activities sponsored by the Brimstone Hill Fortress National Park Society (BHFNPS), the St. Kitts, Nevis and Anguilla National Bank Ltd., the Rotary Club of Liamuiga and Leyton Microcomputer Services.
Sixteen primary schools from across St. Kitts were divided into four zones and were then quizzed in the areas of history, geography, civics, festivals, sports and culture. The winners of each zone then moved on to the final round of competition, with Sandy Point emerging victorious and taking the title from 2006 champions Maurice Hillier Primary School.
Sir Probyn Inniss, President of the BHFNPS and Chair for the History & Heritage Week Committee said he was proud of this year’s competition but felt that there was still room for improvement.
“Our observation has been that certain schools have done very well in this competition while others have not done as well as they could have. We need to find a way to level the playing field,” he said.
He went on to say that the only logical solution to this problem was to develop a standardized Social Studies text book with accompanying workbooks for all of the primary schools in the twin-island Federation.

“I have no doubt that they can be produced and that is why I am appealing to organizations like UNESCO and the private business sector to assist in funding such an essential project,” said the President.
In addition to naming the champion for the competition, Maurice Hillier, St. Christopher Preparatory, Sandy Point and Estridge Primary all received trophies for winning their respective zonal competitions.
Elvis Isaac of the Edgar T. Morris Primary School and Zenique Browne of Sandy Point also received special honors for being the top scorers in the preliminary and final rounds of the quiz.
The BHFNPS generously donated three free admissions and a $35 certificate for the national park’s gift shop to all of the thirty-two students who participated in the quiz contest.
Many stalwarts of cultural education in the Federation including the Director of the St. Kitts Department of Culture, Creighton Pencheon were in attendance for the ceremony prompting Inniss to close his speech by declaring, “Long may the spirit of collaboration continue for the upliftment and betterment of the people of our country.”
