COUNTRY ABOVE SELF

Deputy Premier Hensley Daniel
By: Ursula Huggins-Whitney

There have been rumours for some time that the Representative for St. John's, the Hon. Hensley Daniel, is considering stepping down. If what I hear were true, I would certainly encourage the gentleman to do just that.

It canot be easy for Mr. Daniel and his family to see Nevis come to a halt while appeals and judgements take time. What could be more honourable than to follow the Nevis motto “Country Above Self”, and this I believe Mr. Daniel should take this to heart. If the rumours are correct and he acted, he would earn the respect of the people of Nevis.

It seems to me that in the interests of Nevis any further expenditure for lawyers and related expenses will only add to the already considerable millions in debt which the NIA owes to local banks and others.

I know Mr. Daniel to be an honorable man, but am also certain that our Premier would like to stay in power as long as he possiby can, no matter the cost to Nevisians.

If Mr. Daniel were to step down, he would earn respect from most people for having made a difficult choice and performed an honorable action. I urge him to do so, and become a shining example to our youth of what “Country Above Self” means.
