BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CHILDREN are truly our future and along with the basic needs of clothing, food and shelter, they also need guidance and support from positive people, parents and adults alike.

There are several individuals who understand that need, persons such as the reigning National Carnival Queen, Kalia Huggins.

Last Saturday, April 7, Huggins paid a courtesy call to the Children’s Home where she described her visit as an “amazing experience”.

“I think my favourite part was them teaching me how to sing,” she said. “During my visit, I allowed them to introduce themselves and say something they love to do. I asked them what their favourite food was and what they wanted to become in life.”

The 2011-2012 Queen, also said that they spoke about how they would go about achieving their goals with actual goal setting.

It is important to her that children grow up the right way, as there are many issues that sometimes affect them.

One of those issues which is a concern of hers is Child Abuse and the awareness of it.

It was also her platform for the National Carnival Queen Pageant in December 2011, and an issue she feels needs more attention.

Hence, her visit to the Children’s Home was a part of an ongoing awareness project she is creating.

“April is actually Child Abuse month so going to the Children’s Home just to spend time and basically interact with them was first on my agenda,” she said.

The 23-year-old who hopes to pursue a career in the field of Psychology with special focus on children and teens said that she will be doing a month of activities and also hopefully various other activities throughout the year centered on creating awareness of Child Abuse.

With Psychology as a career, she will have an opportunity to make a contribution to her country by healing the minds and hearts of troubled youth in the Federation.

In particular, Huggins is drawn to victims of child abuse and is devoted to placing the spotlight on an issue which she believes has lurked in the shadows for far too long.
