BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 12th 2012 - On April 14 and 15, 2012, the 34 Heads of State and Government of the Americas will meet in Cartagena, Colombia, for the Sixth Summit of the Americas, to discuss a number of critical issues affecting the citizens of the Hemisphere.

The leaders will be guided in their deliberations by the theme of the Summit “Connecting the Americas: Partners for Prosperity”, which focuses on the role of physical integration and regional cooperation as a means to achieve greater levels of development and to overcome the Hemisphere’s challenges in several key areas. These include poverty and inequalities, citizen security, disasters and access to technologies. This forum that occurs every three years, offers the opportunity for countries to jointly define a hemispheric agenda at the highest level to address urgent challenges and bring about positive change.

At the 53rd Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors of the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) held in March 2012, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Jose Miguel Insulza, referenced the issue of security and inequality when he remarked that both were the two major concerns for the citizens of the hemisphere. “Although we have succeeded in reducing poverty, the gap in inequalities is hard to ignore”, the Head of the OAS said.

Speaking from his office in Basseterre, the OAS Representative to the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. Starret Greene said that it was important for the citizens of the Hemisphere to have access to technologies as a means to strengthen their connection with each other and with the outside world as well. “Using technologies to achieve greater efficiencies in all aspects of their daily lives is a necessary condition for citizens of our region to realize their fullest potential in a globalized economy and in an interconnected and competitive world”, Mr. Greene concluded.

The Hemisphere’s Leaders are expected to sign a document at the end of the 2 day Summit that will detail a number of recommendations for addressing, in a spirit of cooperation and solidarity, the pressing political, economic, security, social and technological challenges, facing the peoples of the Americas.
