    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  April 13 th, 2012   – Fifth form students from six of the Territory’s secondary schools will next week participate in the 18th Annual Right Start Programme aimed at preparing students for the “World of Work” as Government works to enhance a Culture of Excellence.

     

    Sponsored by the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) in collaboration with the H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC), students will attend sessions in leadership development, interview preparedness, winning resume writing, college preparation and professional ethics and etiquette.

     

    In addition there will be sessions entitled, “The Leader in You” by Mrs. Karia Christopher the Human Resources Manager at the Telecommunications Regulations Committee; “The Power of Leadership” by Mr. Esteban Smith, Vice President of the HLSCC Phi Theta Kappa Honour Society; and “Personal Branding” by Mrs. Alicia Green the Marketing Manager of the International Finance Centre.

     

    Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn applauds this worthwhile initiative and hopes students will stay attentive and interactive during the sessions.

     

    “Opportunities that will foster growth and development for students as they prepare to enhance the educational and career pursuits are to be taken advantage of. It is important that they get this exposure early on as we need to prepare them for a country they will later inherit,” Minister Walwyn said.

     

    Guidance Counsellor and Coordinator of this year’s Right Start Programme, Mr. Sylvester Smith in speaking with the Department of Information and Public Relations highlighted the focus on leadership.

     

    He said, “It takes a lot to be a man or woman who will stand out with integrity and understand what it means to sacrifice, serve, take risks, be determined and be a person of action. At the end of the day we realise that we want our students to be leaders and it is our goal and responsibility to teach them what that means.”

     

    Participating schools are the Elmore Stoutt High School, Bregado Flax Educational Centre Secondary, Cedar International, the BVI Technical and Vocational Institute, St. George’s Secondary and Seventh Day Adventist Secondary.

     

    The two-day programme, which is being observed under the theme “Preparation for Life. The Right to Lead”, commences on April 16 at the Eileene L. Parsons Auditorium. The proceedings will be chaired by ESHS Principal, Ms. Mellissa Amey while remarks will be delivered by Minister for Education and Culture Hon. Myron V. Walwyn.

     

    Other facilitators include Ms. Stacy Lloyd, Human Resources Manager at Scotia Bank (BVI) Limited; Pastor Melvin Turnbull of the Cane Garden Bay Baptist Church; Mrs. Marsha Smith, Acting Chief Training Officer, BVI Government; Mr. Gareth Thomas, Managing Director, Ogier; and Mr. Albert Wheatley, Owner, Service Koncepts.

     

    Sponsors include Bolo’s Department Store, Island Services (BVI) Limited, O’Neal Webster Barristers and Solicitors, Road Town Wholesale Trading Limited, Beacon Capital Management, the Human Resources Department - Government of the Virgin Islands and the Ministry of Education and Culture.
