Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  April 13th, 2012  - Celebrations to mark the observance of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) World Day for Safety and Health at Work on April 27 are well underway.

Members of the public will be treated to informative and creative presentations and displays around this year’s theme, Green Jobs: Promoting Safety and Health in a Green Economy at a fair held at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park beginning at 9:30am.

Health and Safety Project Coordinator of the Safety and Health Unit in the Department of Human Resources Mrs. Sylvia George said this year’s theme is very applicable to the Virgin Islands as during these times of economic challenges the Territory is finding more and more opportunities to develop a green economy.

Mrs. George explained to the Department of Information and Public Relations, “The main focus of ILO Day is to educate the public service and the community about the direct link to the theme and new emerging industries within the Virgin Islands economy.”

She added, “We are partnering with several local business and enterprises that are making strides in developing green jobs in the Virgin Islands as well as a number of departments that have been practicing green initiatives.

To this end, the departments have been encouraging the public to change certain habits and practices that were negatively affecting the workers, the environment, the ecosystems and the safety and health of the public.”

Acting Director of the Department of Human Resources Mrs. Michelle Donovan-Stevens shared, “It is important that we take a closer look at this year’s theme, to examine how our current practices are connected. If we answer basic questions, we will realise that there is a trend within the public service towards the practice of green jobs. With the shift and changes in job performances, effective safety and health measures have been implemented to protect workers, the environment and the ecosystem to benefit the economy and that in itself is a major accomplishment.”

During the ceremony to observe World Day for Safety and Health at Work, representatives from various ministries and departments will participate in the celebration by performing skits, poems, songs and other dramatic presentations on Green Jobs: Promoting Safety and Health in a Green Economy, while partners from the private sector: Green Technology, Green VI, Nature’s Way, Pro-Vet, Worldhousecaribbean.org and Minnie’s Veggie Plus will have booths displaying the strides they are making towards building a green economy.

World Day for Safety and Health at Work is celebrated annually to focus international attention on issues related to occupational safety and health, and to raise awareness on how promoting and creating a safety and health culture can help reduce, and eliminate work related injuries, illnesses, or death.
