Press Release

BRADES, Montserrat, April 16th, 2012  –  With the official start of the 2012 Atlantic Hurricane season, less than two months away , the Disaster Management Coordination Agency (DMCA) is encouraging residents to start their preparations now. This should include developing hurricane preparedness plans for families, businesses and communities.

While the NHC (National Hurricane Centre in Miami, and the University of Colorado) both predict a tamer season for 2012, the DMCA urges residents to take action to minimise their risk and vulnerability by planning ahead to reduce the chances of injury, and damage to property, businesses and the environment.

Before an actual storm, residents should have emergency supply kits, secure homes, and be aware of shelter options, or other places to go in case they need to evacuate their homes.

Everyone should stay aware of developments during the season, and consume information from official and credible sources.

Businesses should also have contingency plans in place to respond to warnings and impacts from any weather system.

The DMCA will continue to work with local and regional partners to support disaster risk reduction for residents, and advise on all risks.

The agency will continue to inform the public through radio and all available media about impeding storms and tips on preparing. The department is also testing a newly installed alerting server, which they plan to utilize for sending email alerts and updates to subscribers.

Residents are encouraged to register on the DMCA alerting website https://www.montserrat-alerts.net/
