Pick-up truck crashes into airport fence; driver unhurt

By: Terresa McCall, SKNVibes.com

BASSETERRE, St. Kits – A Saturday evening accident involving a pick-up truck resulted in damage to some 45 feet of fence of the Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport and an unharmed driver.

The incident occurred at about 9:10 p.m. on Saturday (Apr. 14) and, according Sergeant Calvin Amory of the Traffic Department, he received information indicating that Rondell Phillip was driving motor pick-up truck P5496 when the incident occurred.

He said the vehicle, owned by the St. Kitts Electricity Corporation Ltd (SKLEC), was travelling from St. Peters towards Basseterre and when it had engaged the corner in the vicinity of the entrance to the airport tower, Phillip reportedly blacked out and lost control of it.

The vehicle made contact with a portion of the RLB International Airport fence before depositing there on its right side with its front facing the direction from whence it came.

Police officers, an Emergency Medical Services unit and officials from the St. Christopher Air and Sea Port Authority (SCASPA) were all summoned to the scene.

SKNVibes understands that though unhurt, Phillip was transported to the Joseph N. France General Hospital for an examination.

    The vehicle was extensive damaged.

As early as the next day, a makeshift fence was erected to replace that portion which was ripped away during the accident and this media house understands that plans are afoot to commence reconstructing sometime this week.

Some might count him lucky while others would chalk it up to divine intervention but, whatever the belief, the common expression is that Rondell Phillip – a SKLEC employee - should be counting his blessings, having been fortunate enough to escape the incident with life and limb.
