ST. GEORGE’S Grenada, APRIL16th, 2012  --  Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas has welcomed initiatives aimed at deepening the relationship between the Caribbean and the Americas.

Speaking at the Sixth Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, the Prime Minister said the increased collaboration between the Caribbean and the Americas will be mutually beneficial.

“Mindful of the serious economic, security and development challenges that face all our countries to one degree or another, we believe that there is, among our sister nations, a renewed commitment to bolster our efforts in addressing our common concerns and challenges,” he told the summit, which had as its theme “Connecting the Americas: Partnerships for Prosperity”.

The Prime Minister said the "inescapable reality” is that the nations of the Americas must unite in a common aspiration for prosperity and well-being by deepening relations, harnessing energies and “uniting our will in firm commitment” to connect the Americas through a significantly enhanced and focussed state-to-state partnership.

He said the people of Grenada are proud to join in “this worthy cause” and praised Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos on his “insightfulness and vision for the true path to ultimate success for all our people.”

The Prime Minister said the difficulties affecting the global economy provide “an opportune time to address the trying challenges of attaining and sustaining successful economies.”

Prime Minister Thomas, who returns home from the Summit on Monday evening, called for a “binding partnership” that leads to “transformative action” to impact the lives of the people of the region.

He reiterated Grenada’s focus on a “more resilient platform of development”, which encompasses five fundamental pillars; Tourism and Hospitality, Health, Wellness and Education, Energy, ICT and Agribusiness.

“Our approach is founded on the conviction that a diversified base allows for holistic development, thereby contributing to an environment that is ultimately conducive to sustainable economic growth and prosperity,” Prime Minister Thomas told the summit.
