Lower Monkey Hill residents disgust over growing waste problem

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - RESIDENTS of Lower Monkey Hill have raised complaints recently over the seeming absence of the Solid Waste Management Corporation (SWMC) in their area after the organisation missed its normally scheduled pickup two weeks in a row.

One resident told SKNVibes that he tried to be understanding of the SWMC after they missed their normal Monday morning pickup last week (June 23), but added that he grew increasingly upset this morning after discovering that the truck had still not arrived to remove the waste.

“We’re all unhappy about it. Not only does it smell and look bad, but it’s a health hazard. There are all kinds of disease-carrying flies and stray animals that are being attracted to the piles of trash,” he informed. “They need to get out here as soon as possible and get this mess cleaned up.” ~~Adz:Right~~

SKNVibes contacted Wilmon McCall, Operations Manager for the SWMC, who stated that the problem arose due to “technical issues” beyond the organisation’s control.

“We were running on one truck at the time, so to speak, and so we were unable to complete our normal routes last week,” said McCall.

While the Operations Manager did not make it clear what the exact issue with the truck was, he did say it had been resolved and that the Lower Monkey Hill area should “be cleared by the end of the day.”

McCall asked for the public’s continued understanding in those areas that were affected by the equipment failure and stated that the SWMC “should have everywhere caught up by the end of the week.”
