ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, April 17th, 2012  --  Prime Minister Hon. Tillman Thomas has described the just concluded Sixth Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, as a “success”. He said there was an “obvious commitment” by leaders to bridge the gap among the countries of the hemisphere.

The meeting, he said, addressed a number of issues that were critical to the future of the people of the hemisphere including poverty reduction, security and the impact of the drug war on the region’s economic and social fabric.

“There was a strong sense of solidarity among leaders to focus on a development strategy that addresses how our people can benefit from the resources of our region. We also recognised the need to stand together to deal with the trafficking of drugs through our region,,” Prime Minister Thomas said, as he expressed optimism that the Caribbean will not be left out of the debate.

The Prime Minister, who returned from the Summit late Monday night, said he was pleased that leaders were engaged in real dialogue on “issues that matter” to the people of the hemisphere, including improving transportation between the Caribbean and the Americas.

He pointed to bilateral discussions with the President of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla Miranda on the removal of visa restrictions for citizens of Grenada and Costa Rica, which will enhance the tourism potential for both countries.

In addressing the Summit, the Prime Minister gave his support to a call for the inclusion and involvement of Cuba, in discussions on the future of the hemispheric movement.

“I look ahead to a day, which I trust will not be in the too distant future, when ALL the nations of this Hemisphere might be represented at this table, so that we might indeed act in concert for all the people of the Americas,” the Prime Minister declared.

The Grenadian leader also shared some light hearted moments with the President of the United States, Barack Obama, discussing politics and family, among other matters.
