Traffic Court busy… several convicted over past weeks

    BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE courts continue to be frequented by persons who have failed to abide by the precepts of the law and continue to suffer the prescribed for such behaviour.

     

    Over the past four weeks, approximately 15 individuals were convicted at Traffic Court in Basseterre, majority of whom were ordered to pay fines.

     

    On March 22 Jeffery Bass was convicted of using a cellular phone while operating his vehicle, for which he was fined $200. The sum was to be paid within one week or serve 14 days at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    The following week, three individuals appeared before the court and were also found to be guilty as charged.

     

    Shadwell resident Gervin Seaton was convicted of driving without insurance, driving without a driver’s license and taking vehicle without consent of the owner. He was cautioned on the last two counts, and on the first fined $1000 which is to be paid within one month or in default, he has to serve one month in prison.

     

    The offences were committed on March 28, 2012.

     

    Terrence Condor of Bird Rock – for driving without due care and attention – was convicted and discharged. The offence was committed on May 3, 2011.

     

    Conaree resident Elroy Liburd appeared before the court on charges of driving without due care and attention, failing to specimen of blood and driving under the influence (DUI). While convicted and cautioned on the first two charges, conviction of the third led to the imposition of a $1 500 fine and disqualification from holding a driver’s license for two months (July and August, 2012).

     

    The sum is to be paid within one month or a three-month custodial sentence would be imposed. The offences were committed on August 19, 2011.

     

    Several persons who appeared before the court on April 5 submitted that they were guilty of the offences for which they were charged. And as such, they were penalised for their wrongdoing.

     

    Jason Eddy of Sandy Point – for making use of indecent language – was fined $500 which was to have been paid forthwith or serve one month in prison. This publication understands that this charge was laid following Eddy’s interaction with a Traffic Department officer on February 10, 2012.

     

    Pasrons resident Trevor Mason pleaded guilty to three counts of driving off the bus route and was fined $100 for each. The sums are to be paid within two months or serve 14 days in the lock up.

     

    A $300 fine has to be paid by St. Peters’ Anthony David for an October 3, 2011 offence of driving without due care and attention. He has one month to pay the fine.

     

    For failing to comply with traffic directions, Etson Dore of Cayon was ordered to pay forthwith a $100 fine. The offence was committed on April 14, 2011.

     

    A total of $1 200 had to be paid by Devon Michael of New Pond Site for driving without a valid driver’s license and driving without insurance. The offences were committed on December 8, 2011.

     

    Casey Blackman confessed to a November 22, 2011 offence of driving without due care and attention and was fined $400. He has one month to pay the fine or the court will impose a one month custodial sentence.

     

    Jervis Chapman of Upper Cayon and Jedrah Percival of Cayon were both charged with separate counts of driving without due care and attention.  Chapman was fined $400 while Percival was cautioned. Both offences occurred on January 25, 2012.

     

    The doors of Traffic Court last swung open on April 12 and saw three persons being convicted of driving without due care and attention.

     

    Clive Lake of Halfway Tree was fined a total of $500 for July 9, 2011 offences of driving without due care and attention and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

     

    Having been convicted of driving without due care and attention, Dwayne Samuel of Conaree was discharged.

     

    Upper Monkey Hill resident Leroy Carey was convicted of driving without due care and attention, driving without a license and driving without insurance. He was fined $300, $200 and $1000 respectively. All sums are to be paid within two weeks or serve one month at Her Majesty’s Prison.

     

    The offences were committed on October 9, 2011.

     

    Meanwhile, the Traffic Department continues to promote road safety and one of its most recent exercises took the form of a vehicle checkpoint which was set up in the vicinity of the roundabout closest to the RLB International Airport.

     

    In a little less than two hours, some 90 vehicles were stopped and checked and a total of 18 tickets were issued. Ten tickets were issued to persons who failed to wear their seatbelts, one for overcrowding of vehicle, six to persons who drive unlicensed vehicles and one to an individual who did not have the proper child seat in their vehicle.
