New BVIHSA board charts a course for improved health services

    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  April 18th, 2012  – The new BVI Health Services Authority (BVIHSA) Board has pledged to place particular emphasis on improving customer service.

    This came during an orientation session with Minister for Health and Social Development, Honourable Ronnie W. Skelton, where he shared the Government’s vision for delivery of health services to the people of the Territory, the functions of the BVI Health Services Authority Board and proposed strategies to address the current challenges faced.

     

    The Board also considered ways to improve access to the Road Town Clinic in an effort to reduce the number of persons seen by the Emergency Room of the Peebles Hospital for minor ailments.

     

    Additionally, the Board will also partner with the Ministry of Health and Social Development to implement a career development programme in public and private schools to recruit and train students for careers in the health sector.

     

    The orientation session which was held on March 26, is one aspect of an ongoing programme of professional development for the BVI Health Services Authority with the view of enhancing its services to be more responsive to the growing needs of the community.

     

    Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development, Mrs. Petrona N. Davies chaired the session, and presenters included the Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Irad Potter, Honourable Attorney General, Dr. Christopher Malcolm and Deputy Financial Secretary, Mr. Wendell Gaskin.

    The new Chairman of the BVI Health Services Authority is Bishop John I. Cline, with Sir Errol Waldron as Deputy Chairman. Other members are Mrs. Ayana Glasgow-Liburd, Mr. Melvin “Mitch” Turnbull, Nurse Patricia A. Hanley, Mr. Edward DeCastro, Mr. Ron Potter, Dr. Joel Stevens and Mr. Lemuel Smith. Ex-Officio members are Acting Chief Executive Officer of the BVI Health Services Authority, Dr. Ronald Georges and Acting Financial Controller, Mrs. Lillymay Lettsome-Carlton.

     

    The BVI Health Services Authority was established in March 2004 after the passage of the BVI Health Services Authority Act. The Authority endeavours to meet the health care needs of the community through the Peebles Hospital and a network of eleven community clinics strategically located throughout the Territory.
