Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, April 20th, 2012   – Patrons to the Library Services Department will soon be allowed instant access to the Road Town’s collection as the Library Services Department gears up to launch their New Automated System for Library Week 2012.

On Tuesday, April 24th at 10:30 am under the theme, “Linking You to A World of Information” the BVI Library Services Department will launch its automated system along with its online catalogue, the Virgin Islands Library Catalogue “VI LIBCAT.”

With the launch of the automated system, patrons will now receive a free electronic photo library card valid for two years for use at the Road Town Public Library. With the card, holders may renew library books over the telephone and patrons 14 years and older can borrow up to four books at a time.

With the launch of the “VI LIBCAT” patrons can access a plethora of information online including the Library’s fiction, non-fiction and multi-media collection for children and adults.

Chief Librarian Ms. Suzanne Greenaway said the launch of the automated system and the VI LIBCAT will improve access to information and increase the efficiency of the department.

“Today’s library patrons are technologically savvy, and they have increased expectations about the amount of available information and the library’s ability to provide that information. An automated system will provide patrons with instant access to our resources and help them find the information they are seeking much faster”.

Other activities for Library Week 2012 are the Digital Rights Management Workshop to be held on Monday, April 23 at 5:30 pm at the Road Town Public Library.

The workshop coincides with UNESCO’s World Book and Copyright Day. Authors and musicians are invited to come out and learn ways to protect and secure the copyright’s to their work if posted online.

Minister for Education and Culture Honourable Myron V. Walwyn will deliver a radio and television address for Library Week 2012. Additionally, students from the Jost Van Dyke, Willard Wheatley, Robinson O’Neal Memorial and Francis Lettsome Primary Schools will visit their community libraries.

A special almanac feature will be aired on local radio station ZBVI focusing on Librarianship and Information Management as a career and a video highlight of past Library activities will be aired on local television stations.

Children are invited to attend the ‘Dads Reach Out and Read Story Time Programme’ at the Road Town Library on Saturday, April 28 from 10:30am and curl up with a good story by one of the local volunteer dads.

Library Week was implemented by the Library Services Department in 1999 to create awareness of the value of libraries and promote and foster a love of reading. In the Virgin Islands, public libraries exist in Road Town, Virgin Gorda, East End, Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.
