CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - TYLER MARTIN of Maude Crosse Preparatory School is Nevis’ the top student in the 2008 Test of Standards.

“Tyler received best results overall not only for his class but best for the island. We share this joy with Tyler, his parents and his teacher. Tyler is a well-rounded student. He is a very good footballer, an excellent athlete and a fluent speaker,” the school’s Principal, Varina Williams said yesterday when she presented the 2008 School Report during the school’s graduation ceremony held at the Methodist Church, Charlestown.

Tyler’s mother is Her Worship Yasmine Clarke, who presides over the Magistrate’s Court in Charlestown, Nevis. For his outstanding performance, Tyler received the Department of Education Excellence Award, School Award for the top student, Nevis Teachers Union (NTU) Award, and the Premier’s Award for excellent performance in Athletics and Most Improved Player in football.

Another Maude Crosse student, Omari Daniel, son of the Minister of Health and Social Development, Hon. Hensley Daniel and Sonita Daniel, obtained the highest mark for Social Studies on the island and also the highest mark in the class for Language Arts.

Tamara Smithen obtained the highest overall mark for girls in her class, thus gaining the title of Best Girl Performance for Maude Crosse Preparatory School.

The Principal said the Education Department gives special certificate awards to all students gaining overall average of 85 percent and over. This award went to Tyler Martin, Tristan Chaderton, Omari Daniel and Ajani Nisbett.

Myrna Walwyn, an eminent lawyer, was the feature speaker at the graduation ceremony. She told the graduands not to measure their future success only through the amassing of wealth or being successful in their careers, but also to see to it that they excelled in character building.

“Success will come when you first get an appreciation for the very important role God plays or should play in your lives. This appreciation will help you to overcome the many challenges which you will undoubtedly face.

“You will achieve success when you understand that when you make decisions from day to day, and especially those all-important decisions that impact your future, that the most important persons who should influence those decisions are and should be God first and foremost, then your parents and teachers and not your peers at school nor some character on the television or some big music icon, with what may look like a successful life.”

Walwyn told the graduands that while attending secondary school, they should be steadfast, hard working, disciplined, honest, respectful, kind and caring, handing in homework on time, and conscientiously review their school work every evening when they get home from school.

“Your success will come through your perseverance and through burning the midnight oil in the face of great odds. It will come when you determine in your mind that you will not allow the gangs in or out of school to threaten you and to influence you to join them and to engage in criminal activities. It will come through you putting aside what it feels good today until after you would have attained your goal.”

Education Officer Palsy Wikin commended Maude Crosse Preparatory School for outstanding academic performance and for participating in all activities initiated by the Nevis Island Administration Education Department, including football tournaments, Inter-primary Sports and Inter-schools Spelling B and Child Month activities.

Of the 16 students who took the Test of Standards Examination, 10 were transferred to IAI, five to IA2 and one student to IA3. Janetta Morgan was the graduands’ class teacher. ~~Adz:Right~~
