Press Release

ST.GEORGE'S Grenada,  April 24th, 2012  --  Former Minister of Youth Development under the New National Party (NNP) Administration, Mrs. Emmalin Pierre, is asking the Tillman Thomas Administration to move swiftly to complete the Youth Rehabilitation Facility in St. Andrew.

According to Mrs. Pierre, construction of his facility was started by the NNP administration and is over 80% complete.  She said the decision of the NNP Government to invest close to 4 million dollars in the project was based on the very obvious need for a proper facility through which young people can be rehabilitated and prepared to make valuable contributions to society.  She noted that stakeholders in the social sector were all supportive of the project.

Mrs. Pierre is expressing great concern saying that she and many other patriotic Grenadians are saddened to see such an important project left unfinished.  “If our nation is to advance”, she says, “we must be prepared to put people before politics.”

She further states that in spite of the NDC’s criticism of the project during the election campaign, she had been of the view that good sense would have prevailed.  She, like many others,  are now very disappointed,  particularly at a time in which many young  people , some of whom are under 16 year of age  are sent to Prison for  a range of offences.

According to her, a facility of this nature would help to provide such people with a positive alternative. The approximately three million dollars already spent must not be wasted; instead the Government needs to ensure that it be used to make a difference in the lives of our young people.

Mrs. Pierre says that she remains convinced that all the legal issues that have been raised regarding the project since the NDC assumed office are merely aimed at finding reasons to continue to stall construction.

The former Minister is therefore calling on the Government of the day to rise above petty politics in the interest of the nation, and young people in particular.

She added “No one knows whose son or daughter will be in need of such a facility and that is why politics should never have a place in youth development.”
