BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 12TH 2004) – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas said Thursday his Labour Party Government which has a strong record on housing, remains committed to the empowerment of the ordinary man and woman in the twin-island Federation.

Following a tour of one of the 50 completed homes at which some 271 houses will be built, Prime Minister Douglas appealed to nationals of St. Kitts and Nevis living at home and abroad to become an owner of the middle-income homes which are “very-reasonable priced and tastefully completed in an enhanced area well landscaped on 7,000 square feet of land.”

“This is a very strong appeal to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis not only those who are living here, but those who are living abroad and are looking forward to own their own home on this piece of the rock,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He stressed that his St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party Government believes that every Kittitian and Nevisian “must aspire to have his own home. Only then he or she would be able to own a piece of the rock.”

“We believe that housing is one of the important vehicles through which people will be empowered and this Government in particular is very strong in the empowerment of the ordinary man. And that is why I say to our people, no matter where you are in life, no matter where you are employed, you have the right to pursue to own your own home,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader.

Dr. Douglas said his Labour Government will continue to assist persons who are low-income earners.

“Those who are working on the industrial estate, the sugar industry, those who are working in the hotels, who are working in restaurants, who are working in the stores and those who are domestic servants. They also have that right and we will assist that group of persons,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He said Government will not subsidise housing for the well-off as it is of the view that the private sector “should become involved and would provide the necessary solutions for those who are in the middle income and upper income bracket.”

Dr. Douglas expressed gratitude for the tremendous partnership that the President of CLICO, Mr. Leroy Parris has brought to his company.

“I am very confident that in a very short time, these homes will be occupied by people, real people, with little children running around through the rooms, playing in the yard and that is what we want to do at Douglas’ Estate,” the St. Kitts and Nevis leader said.

Prime Minister Douglas was accompanied on the tour by Minister of Housing, the Hon. Cedric Liburd and CLICO President, Mr. Leroy Parris.
