BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – CHARLYN SERENITY BLAKE of Nevis who resides in New York has been turning heads with her creative makeup application talent.

In fact, the makeup artiste received a wonderful opportunity when she was asked to do the makeup for former America’s Next Top Model Cycle Winner, Dannielle Evans.

“I knew the stylist Milou Bazile personally because I worked with her before for other gigs. So knowing my professionalism she contacted me about doing the makeup,” she said.

The event was a party for celebrity stylist Damon Peruzzi, who Evans escorted on a white horse when he made his entrance.

Danielle was such a pleasure to work with, a great spirit and individual,” Blake added.

Growing up, Blake was more of a tomboy who never fancied the so-called ‘girly’ stuff. However, during her late teens her mother began encouraging her to “wear a lil something to finish off her look”, whenever she got dressed.

“So I started dabbling into makeup and basically taught myself the ins and out of it. My mother would also show me certain things and then I just added my own,” she said.

Blake told SKNVibes that her mother Sherilyn Blake, who is a former Miss Nevis and Miss Culture and who had been involved in pageantry, encouraged her to always look her best.

“So over the years I’ve just been trying to perfect my craft. It’s still a learning process.

“To be honest, from the way I would apply my makeup and carry myself, people would always approach me in the street, in malls and business places and ask me about my makeup. But I was so shy because I knew I was only self-taught so I never had the confidence to say, ‘Oh yes I'm an artist’,” she said.

However, one day while at Sephora (a US based branch that sells most high-end brands of makeup) one of the key makeup artistes asked if she worked for MAC Cosmetics.

“So I said, nahhhh… I'm self taught and she said that I should go get certified and make a name for myself, so I did. So now I'm a certified Make-Up Artist.

In June 2011 she became a professional makeup artist having completed her course at Chic Studios in Brooklyn.

The limitless wonder is what she loves of her craft. She can easily create a somber or gothic look, an effortless beauty look for a bride or even an outrageous Lady Gaga look.

“Yes there maybe the ‘Do’s and Don’ts’ but there is no limit. You can be whoever you want to be and at the end of the day wash it all off!

“I believe everyone should wear a ‘lil something’ to enhance what you already have. I feel like women should always complete their look with makeup, even if it’s just a little mascara or lipstick. Imagine being all dressed up without your hair combed? Finish the look with some gloss girl!”

She has done work for music videos including those of Oneal McKnight and Dai Burger, a Ford Model, and worked with stylist Milou Bazile.

She has also won a makeup competition held in August of 2011, where she was up against eight other competitors and they were all asked to create a ‘Lady Gaga’ inspired look in 20 minutes time.
