CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - IN an essay about Nevis’ Iron Band, 10 year old Kelsia Liburd of the Gingerland Primary School emerged local winner of the ‘My Caribbean’ Essay Contest.
Liburd’s essay made it to the final round of the Caribbean competition and will be judged, along with 22 others, by Conde Nast Traveller’s Editorial Committee to determine the overall winners.
Primary school students submitted 250 to 500-word essays on the topic “If you could share a secret about your island with someone visiting for the first time, what would it be?”
In her essay, Liburd explained how the youths in her community used old pots and pans to provide musical entertainment for themselves and others. She described this art form as the island’s “newest sensation”.
Nevis’ Ministry of Tourism has advised that the winner would receive US$2 000 and a special Certificate of Achievement while the runners up will each receive US$500 and a special Certificate. ~~Adz:Right~~
Liburd, who was also the local winner of this year’s Florida Caribbean Cruise Association Environmental Poster Contest, will attend the 31st Annual Caribbean Tourism Conference later this year.
The essay contest is sponsored by Conde Nast Traveller in cooperation with the Caribbean Tourism Organisation.
The top essays from each participating island were submitted to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation, where they were judged and the overall winner for each island was selected.
Other finalists from the primary schools on Nevis were Christina Ram and Kerese Elliott from the Charlestown Primary School, Arnile Francis from the St. Thomas’ Primary School and Keelia English from the St. John’s Primary School.
