    BASSETERRE St. Kitts, April 30th 2012 (SKNIS) - The contribution of local students who played an integral roles in St. Kitts and Nevis’ celebration of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee, were recently recognized.
     
    An award ceremony for participants of various competitions such as arts, crafts, poetry, essays, stamp design and quizzes was held at the Basseterre High School Auditorium on Thursday, April 26, 2012. The winners and participants were met with much appreciation for their outstanding efforts.
     
    Master of Ceremonies, Dr. Michael Blake expressed that now that the Queen is celebrating sixty years on the throne, it is fitting to celebrate the momentous occasion. He further stated that The Ministry of Education felt that it was their duty to ensure that students were given an opportunity to be involved in the celebrations and that the Governor General himself was pleased to know that so many students and schools were actively involved. He also noted that the day was befitting to celebrate as students that do well should be rewarded.
     
    Mr. Raphael Archibald, member of the Diamond Jubilee Committee, explained that students had to do a considerable amount of research for the various competitions and in the process were exposed to the rich history of not only St. Kitts and Nevis, but the wider Caribbean. He further explained that all the information should and must be known by the children and a very effective way of exposing them to it and to appreciate it was through these various activities.
     
    The students were grateful for the opportunity to show their talents on the national stage.
     
    Other events for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will continue until June 12, 2012.
