Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  April 27th, 2012  –  The public will have the opportunity to visit the Archives and Records Management Unit of the Deputy Governor’s Office on Tuesday, May 1 and be a part of the observance of Records May Day.

Records May Day is an initiative created in 2006 by the Society of American Archivists to promote disaster preparedness for Records and Archives. Locally, the Unit will host an Open House and exhibition. Visitors to the Unit will be treated to give-aways, video presentations, a mini exhibition featuring scanned genealogical documents and disaster management tips and techniques for records.

Visitors will also get firsthand exposure to searching old newspapers, slave lists, colonial government records, missionary records and others on microfilm and see new techniques for scanning and preserving newspapers and more modern documents.

Members of the public are encouraged to take steps to advance readiness to protect records of enduring value from damage and destruction.

Possible ideas and activities include: creating or updating emergency contact lists, reviewing disaster management plans to include records and archival materials, scheduling a fire inspection and working to fulfil any recommendations, taking inventory of emergency supplies and replenishing where necessary, and ensuring records in storage are in bankers boxes and up off the floor.

For more ideas, tips and activities, persons are encouraged to visit the Archives and Records Management Unit on the second floor of the Burhym Electric Building or telephone 468-3701 extension 3044.

The Archives and Records Management Unit remains committed to educating the public on the importance of preserving the history of the Virgin Islands by keeping records secure.
