BASSETERRE St. Kitts, May 4th 2012 - Reigning Antiguan Calypso Monarch Keithroy "De Bear" Morson returned to the federation this morning from Antigua to make his second appearance in St.Kitts in as many weeks when the veteran calypsonian appears at tonight's highly anticipated People’s Calypso Bacchanal at PAM Headquarters. After a spectacular performance last weekend at Fat Tuesday’s at Port Zante the demand for an encore performance was to overwhelming for the organizers of the Calypso Bacchanal event to ignore.
“We could not ignore the overwhelming call for De Bear to return and give an encore performance of sort,”said one of the organizers of the event.
“Since Saturday evening at the Fat Tuesday Calypso concert event persons have been bombarding us with requests, suggestions all of which pointed to inviting De Bear back for our show and we just could not ignore the calls for his return and we have been able to book him as he himself had contacted us along with local associates and inquired about the possibility of his return,” the event organizer continued.
“De Bear” will be performing alongside former St.Kitts and Nevis National and Culturama Calypso Kings including multi-time St.Kitts Calypso Monarch and former leeward Islands Calypso King Socrates, former Cultural Calypso King I-Soursop, time National Carnival Calypso King Ayatollah, Multi-time Green Valley and National Junior Calypso King Big Lice, Kinta, Magoo, Forest, Lady Diva, Rudder, Lord Cut, Unexpected, Phonsie and more.
De Bear has and runs a school of calypso in his native Monsterrat. Open since January, his Montserrat Cultural School of Arts operates out of Brades Primary School in Montserrat.
The budding institution provides instruction on the process of constructing calypso. This includes how to write lyrics, how to attach a melody, how to sing it, calypso theory, satire and history.
“I’ve decided that I want to pass on the little knowledge that I have to the youths,” the calypso monarch said.
Currently, De Bear has nine students ranging in age from six to 12. He said he prefers working with the younger generation because they’re more open to learning.
De Bear has several crowns to his name. They include Antigua Independence Calypso King 2002, Antigua Calypso Monarch 2007, Leeward Islands Calypso Monarch 2007 and repeat Calypso Monarch 2010 and 2011.
