Charlestown Nevis (February 17, 2005) Frederick A Morton Jr. an exceptional young man who portrays himself as a true Caribbean son, was one of the proud recipients of the 2005 Vice Chancellor Achievement Award from the University of the West Indies.
The gala benefit saw a black tie ceremony being held on Tuesday February 1, 2005 at the Cipriani, 42 St New York. The honourees were, Verizon, the Bank of Nova Scotia, Caribbean Medals Winners from the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, and the Vice Chancellor Awardees & Caribbean Luminaries.
Mr. Morton, Senior Vice President/Deputy General Counsel of MTV Networks Business & Legal Affairs noted that he was extremely grateful to the university for recognizing his work. He is presently responsible for managing and handling a variety of litigations for the company, including copyright & trademark, idea submission, commercial/contractual disputes and advertising related litigation, administering the companies expansive worldwide intellectual property program and pre-broadcast review.
Accordingly, the award recognizes deserving individuals of Caribbean heritage who are rising stars in their respective fields, or persons who have made significant contributions to, or brought to prominence, issues that affect the Caribbean.
As a true son of the Caribbean, Ive strived always to represent the Caribbean positively in all of my endeavours, he told the government press. And so being recognized by this extraordinary institution as a rising star in my profession as well as for my contributions to the Caribbean is in no uncertain terms a personal milestone in my career.
Born of Nevisian parents - Mr. Frederick and Deloris Morton of Simmonds, Gingerland, Nevis, Frederick Jr, grew up in St. Croix U.S.V.I. although he attended the Junior School in Gingerland during some of his early childhood. He intimated, I feel extremely blessed by the creator to have been born of simply extraordinary Caribbean parents, in a region of the world that commands excellence and of a culture that has so positively influenced the world. I am a Caribbean man!
He graduated from Rutgers University School of Law in 1993, and received numerous awards, including the Alumni Senior Prize, awarded to the graduating senior exhibiting the greatest achievement during his or her entire law school studies and the greatest promise as a future member of the legal profession.
In addition to his illustrious journey in the legal profession, Frederick thrived on educating himself. He has gained a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Columbia University, School of International and Public Affairs, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics, with Emphasis in Finance from Rutgers College, Rutgers University. He served as the President of the West Indian Student Organization and Dean Student Advisory Council. He also attended Harvard University and Princeton University for program studies in public policy and administration.
Throughout his career, he has also made a sustained commitment to community outreach and to advancing pro-social causes. He has contributed pro-bono legal expertise to organizations such as the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Aljira, (a Center for Contemporary Art in Newark, N.J) The center focuses on the development of under-represented artists, women and artists of color.
Working with the Caribbean Tourism Organization recently, Frederick organized an MTV Networks/American Red Cross initiative to provide aid and disaster relief to the victims of the devastating hurricanes that ravaged many of the Caribbean islands in the Summer and Fall of 2004.
