CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – FRIDAY, July 11 marked the end of Programme One of the 19th Annual Summer Environmental Awareness Programme organised by the Nevis Public Library.

Programme One, held from July 7 to 11, attracted high school students between the ages of 12 and 16 years. The students participated in a number of activities, including craft making, cooking demonstration, poetry and essay contests and lectures.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Library Services Joseph Wiltshire commended the organisers for their continued efforts.

“I wish to commend the entire staff of our library services for their continued involvement in the development of our most important resource…our people. Year after year the library continues to provide meaningful activities for the nation’s youth and this year is no exception,” he said.

    De-Alje Liburd

Wiltshire spoke of the programme, as it relates to the Federation’s upcoming Independence celebrations.

“The theme chosen for this year’s programme is timely, for on September 19 we will celebrate our 25th Anniversary of political independence. I believe that all the participants have been provided with the opportunity to make a contribution and to be impacted by some aspect of the sub-theme,” Wiltshire said.

Chief Coordinator of the Programme Evette Liburd, who also gave remarks at the closing ceremony, addressed the role that she said must be played by all citizens of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Mrs. Dora Stevens & Carmesha Merchant

“As we continue to shape the minds of young people, let us remember that we have a great role to play in the future development of our country,” she said.

Also present at the ceremony were Librarian Lornette Hanley, Director of the Nevis Library Services Sonita Daniel and Dora Stevens, wife of the late Ivor Stevens, who was a Deputy Premier and Minister of Communications, Public Utilities and Post and member of the Nevis Island Administration (NIA) and the Federal House.

The participants engaged in activities that focused on the themes “The Road to Independence” by Halstead Byron, “Our Independence, National Symbols and Nation Builders” by Chesley Davis, “Our accomplishments since Independence” by Morris Tyrell and “Charting the Way Forward” by the Hon. Carlisle Powell.

Mrs. Dora Stevens & Nicole Newton

On the final day of the programme, the participants witnessed a cookery demonstration of the national dish of St. Kitts and Nevis by Chef Lenny Liburd.

The theme for the essay contest was “The Road to Independence”, which was won by Carmesha Merchant while Jeheida Howell and I-Shana Broadbelt were winners of the second and third place awards, respectively.

Brothers De-Alje and De-Jano Liburd were the first and second place winners of the Poetry Contest with their respective pieces “We are moving on” and “Our independence”.

An award was also given to Nicole Newton for being the most helpful participant.

The sessions were held at the St. Georges Branch Library in Gingerland.
