BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS (FEBRUARY 13TH 2004) – Vendors at the Amina Craft Market told St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Dr. the Hon. Denzil L. Douglas on Friday they are generally satisfied with their new location between Port Zante and the Pelican Mall.
Dr. Douglas made an unscheduled visit to the expanded vendors market, on the way back to his office, following lunch at the nearby King’s Palace at Port Zante.
The Prime Minister spoke with several of the vendors who said that although they had minor concerns, they were extremely happy and gave several suggestions on how the area can be further enhanced.
Some vendors said they are now out of the sun and the rain and were looking forward to the implementation of the other initiatives previously announced by Minister of Tourism, the Hon. Dwyer Astaphan.
“We are very happy to see the Prime Minister is, as usual, interested in our welfare,” said a female vendor. As Saturday is Valentine’s Day, Dr. Douglas gave the female vendors a red rose.
“We are extremely happy. The advantages far outweigh the little problems,” said another, who opened her bag and showed off the US dollars she made on Friday from the hundreds of passengers who came ashore from the 2,450-passenger Norwegian Sky, the 1,000-passenger Costa Marina and the 200-passenger Star Clipper.
Mrs. Moore, who was previously located at the Circus, told Prime Minister Douglas, she was very happy with her new location and shared with the St. Kitts and Nevis her plans for enhancing the area.
Passengers, who learned while shopping for souvenirs, that Prime Minister Douglas was in the area, greeted him and congratulated him on the “beauty of St. Kitts, the friendliness of the people and the cleanliness of the island.”
“We have been to several destinations and this island is the cleanest,” they said. Several who requested their personal photos be taken with Prime Minister Douglas said they would return to St. Kitts for extended holidays and promised to tell their friends about the happy experience of visiting St. Kitts. |
