Press Release

ST.GEORGE'S Grenada,  May18th, 2012  --  Ladies and gentlemen, tonight I take this opportunity to express my thanks and gratitude to the many Grenadians home and abroad, for their support, encouragement, solidarity and prayers particularly during the last two weeks. The many calls and visits from persons of all walks of life were indeed appreciated and comforting.

The recent events that occupied the time and minds of many are a clear indication that as a people we are concerned about the state and future of our beloved country. It is also clear that we are supportive of leadership that is premised on decency and the upholding of the cherished values of the Grenadian people.

More over the decision of the House of Representative is a clear manifestation that we are concerned about the preservation of our democratic institutions, our practices and the sustainability of the peace and stability of our land. It is clearly a call for unity and a new dispensation.

Most of you are clearly indicating that as a government, we need to resolutely pursue the business of managing the country effectively and continue to deliver on the commitments we made.

Let me reassure you that I hear you and am dedicated to that task. . With your prayers and support, it is my view that we will continue to achieve our goals and targets. We will achieve this by working as a team that is willing, committed and united in our approach to our many tasks.

This will augur well for democracy and the development of our people.  It is in the context that the members of Cabinet especially in the Honourable House of Parliament,  have to be prepared to demonstrate a sincere desire to put the interest of the Nation first and to serve the people  as diligently as we all can.

In the light of the foregoing and having regard to the previous posture of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Karl Hood, I have today accepted his resignation and advised the Governor General to relieve him of his Ministerial duties. In the meantime, I will assume that portfolio.  I wish to thank him for his service to this nation and wish him well in his future endeavours.

I also take this opportunity to thank my parliamentary colleagues for their support. I urge them to always remember that we are here to respond to the wishes of our people. I consider this a privilege and opportunity to serve them and our country.

Ladies and gentlemen, I am of the firm belief that a coherent, committed and united team can achieve much.  That is why, I am confident that over the next year we will be able to implement the many projects and initiatives that are designed to bring much benefits to our people. With God’s guidance and blessings and your continued patience and support, we will endure and achieve.

As an act of appreciation for the fervent prayers and expressions of support for the government especially in the past two weeks, I, in my capacity as Prime Minister, will be holding a national thanksgiving rally at the Grenville Car Park on Sunday 20 May from 3:00 PM. The entire nation is invited to join us in giving thanks and acknowledging our gratitude.

    I thank you.
