Health Risks Linked to Faulty Tattooing Raise Concern

~~Adz:Left~~ROADTOWN, Tortola- Health officials are concerned about the serious health risks that people in the Territory, and especially the youth, innocently expose themselves to when having body tattoos performed by artists who do not observe high hygienic standards.

Acting Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Social Development Ms. Petrona Smith said Government’s Health Promotion Unit has commenced a public awareness programme to make residents more aware of the dangers associated with that widespread practice.

Besides other health problems, recipients of tattoos and other kinds of body piercing run the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and infectious scars when the procedure is not done in a clean environment and with adequately sterilised equipment.

The Acting Permanent Secretary noted that the practice of having body tattoos done tends to be more prevalent during the festival period. As a result she has urged residents of in the Territory to be watchful and ensure that the procedure is only performed by experienced tattoo artistes in a sanitary environment.

Although the British Virgin Islands does not currently have any binding regulations that target professionals who are offering tattooing services to the public, Government has begun the process of drafting the applicable regulations. “Until the regulation is ready for implementation, each individual has the responsibility to be cautious and ensure that their health is not put at risk,” Ms. Smith said.

The Ministry of Health and Social Development works to provide leadership that promotes health, social wellbeing, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development. Among other things, the Ministry is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the health and social development of the Territory.
