CHARLESTOWN, Nevis - THE Bank of Nevis has made this summer vacation exciting by sponsoring an Under-15 Cricket Coaching Clinic, which opened yesterday at Grove Park after a brief ceremony attended by government officials and employees of the bank.

The Minister of Social Development, the Hon. Hensley Daniel, thanked officials of the Bank of Nevis for sponsoring the Cricket Coaching Clinic. “We thank the Bank of Nevis for joining us in this partnership,” he said.

Addressing those enlisted to participate, Minister Daniel, who also holds the Sports and Youth portfolio, urged the youths to be at their best, “To who much is given, much is expected. We expect you to be good role models,” he said.

Daniel advised the youths to “conduct yourselves in an orderly manner. We will not spend money on those who lack discipline. Stay focused. Sports is a public health measure. We want you all to benefit immensely.”

He told the youths that they were privileged to have as trainers test players such as Stewart Williams, Carl Tuckett and Elquemedo Willet. “Let us make sure that cricket will remain competitive. You have an advantage, take the training seriously.”

The Minister is optimistic that equipping boys and girls with skills would keep them away from anti-social behaviour.

The Minister with responsibility for Transport and Public Works and also a former President of the Nevis Cricket Association, the Hon. Carlisle Powell, said over the years the Bank of Nevis had ensured the Leeward Islands had full representation by donating uniforms every second year. He said his dream is that sponsorship for the coaching clinic would one day amount to EC$100 000.

Powell told the youngsters that with determination they could reach high heights in playing cricket, adding that “Elquemedo Willet was only 19 when he played for West Indies cricket”.  He said the coaching clinic was a useful development.   ~~Adz:Right~~

Vernon Springer, who chaired the brief ceremony, appealed to Nevis Island Administration (NIA) to rename Grove Park after Elquemedo Willet. “Elquemedo contribution must not go unnoticed.  During the 25th Anniversary, he should be honoured.  We need to rename the Park after him. We need to respect our heroes. Elquemedo paved the way for all the great cricketers in Nevis.”

The Marketing Officer, Bank of Nevis, Bronte Swanston Hendrickson, told the children to learn as much as they could, to be disciplined and to have lots of fun during the cricket coaching clinic.

Carl Tuckett, who will coordinate the Coaching Clinic, thanked the Bank of Nevis for sponsoring the initiative. He told the children that their commitment and dedication would make cricket in Nevis strong. Tuckett, a former West Indies player, said one of the objectives of the Clinic is for early identification of talents. The Clinic is expected to enhance socialisation skills.

Tucket said discipline would be crucial during the coaching sessions and “if we cannot handle you, you may have to leave. Fighting and use of indecent language will not be tolerated”.

The participants of the Coaching Clinic were drawn from all primary schools on Nevis and will run until July 25.
