BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – THE swift hammer of justice came down today between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Basseterre High Court and sounded the death knell of four men who were found guilty of the murder of Gavin ‘Magilla’ Gilbert.

Shortly before 1:00 p.m. today Sheldon ‘Hatcher’ Isaac, Romeo ‘Buncum’ Cannonier, Ruedeney ‘Denny’ Williams and Louis ‘Tooloo’ Gardner were transported from Her Majesty’s prison to the Basseterre High Court where they awaited the reading of their sentence by the Presiding Judge, Justice Alfred Redhead.

Redhead, who had listened to pleas in mitigation presented by the lawyers representing the convicted men, today indicated that having reviewed the psychiatric and social reports for all of them, he has decided to impose the death penalty.

“…you will be taken from here to a place of safety where you shall be kept until

Sheldon Isaac (green shirt), Ruedeney Williams (brown shirt) and Louis Gardner (brown/white shirt) leaving the Courthouse
you are hanged by the neck until you are dead and your body be buried within the walls of the prison and may God have mercy on your soul.”

The sound of these words filled the courtroom after Justice Redhead ordered all to stand.  One by one, the stoic-faced convicts were read their fate.

After sentence was passed, the young men of whom the oldest is 32 years were shackled and taken back to the prison where they will await their day of hanging.

“Let me hug him…” a woman, identified as the mother of Ruedeney Williams, solemnly requested but was denied.

While three of the foursome now have a single death sentence hanging over their heads, Cannonier has a double hanging over his.

~~Adz:Left~~ He is said to be the first person in the history of St. Christopher and Nevis to have two death sentences imposed on him for two separate murders. On October 23, 2007, Cannonier was convicted of the murder of Police Constable Delvin Nisbett and was sentenced to hang for that crime on January 24, 2008.

Superintendent of Prisons Franklyn Dorset told SKNVibes that the latest sentence has moved the number of condemned persons at Her Majesty’s Prison from four to seven. Those condemned are Travis Duporte, Al Laplace, Everson Mitchum, Romeo Cannonier, Sheldon Isaac, Louis Gardner and Ruedeney Williams.
