BVI Allied Health Professionals Council Gets New Members

~~Adz:Right~~ROADTOWN, Tortola- Five new members have been appointed to chart the direction of the BVI Allied Health Professionals Council during the next three years. The appointments, which were recently approved by Cabinet, are effective from 1 May 2008 until 30 April 2011.

The new members are Dr. June Samuel, Ms. Gracia Wheatley, Dr. Virginia Rubaine, Ms. Tania Medley, and Mrs. Phillipa Barry,The chairman.

The BVI Allied Health Professionals Council is, among other things, empowered to consider all applications and give directions for the registration of professionals who wish to be registered as allied health practitioners in the Territory. 

In accordance with the Medical Act, 2000 this category of health workers includes dieticians, pharmacists, chiropractors, medical laboratory technologists, opticians, physiotherapists, podiatrists, psychologists, environmentalist health inspectors, imaging technologists, and naturopaths.

The BVI Allied Professionals Council provides Government with advice related to the rights, liabilities, and obligations of those health practitioners, among other relevant matters.

The Council functions under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and Social Development, which serves to provide leadership that promotes health, social well-being, and a safe environment as positive resources for living and sustainable development. Among other things, it is responsible for safeguarding and promoting the health and social development of the Territory.
