Summer Camps open doors to all...

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts - THE summer is here and for many young people this means going on vacation overseas while for others it is just another boring hot summer. But, for the latter, it does not have to be so because a number of summer camps are being organised by various institutions in the Federation.

The most recent of these summer camps is the Marriott Resort Kids Club Camp which caters for children from ages four to 11. This camp started on July 7 and will end on October 3. Among the many activities to keep the children fully occupied are sports, deep sea discovery, carnival and other adventures.

Another camp, but of a slightly different nature, is the Department of Information and Technology Summer Camp (ITC). According to Collin Frank, this camp is for children between the ages 12 to 16 and will run from July 18 to 22, then again from July 25 to 29 and is divided into morning and afternoon sessions.

Frank also said the course outline includes Parts of the Computer, Use of the Internet and Web Research amongst others. This camp is being held at the National Information and Communication Technology Centre at the C.A. Paul Southwell Industrial Site.

The Department of Youth is also hosting a summer camp which is said to be the biggest among the camps. It is being conducted at the Beach Allen Primary School with over 300 participants working under the theme ‘Developing Children for today and tomorrow’ while bearing the slogan ‘Badness out of Style’.   ~~Adz:Right~~

Geoffrey Hanley, an official of the Department of Youth, said the camp, which also has a sub-theme - 25 years of progressive youth development -, began today [Sunday, July 20] and will end on Thursday, July 31.

Hanley said the Department of Youth is celebrating the 25th year of its residential summer camp, noting it is a great accomplishment. He said the camp, like any other, offers young people the opportunity to develop their skills in the areas of Arts and Craft, Cooking, Public Speaking, Photography and Painting.

He added that the camp would also give the children a chance to express themselves about issues with which they are confronted, as a number of facilitators would be present to speak to them on Conflict Resolution, Self-esteem, Healthy Living, HIV/AIDS and a number other issues.

“The Police along with the Prison will also make presentations to encourage the children to stay out of trouble,” he said.

Hanley is appealing and encouraging parents to enrol their children in whichever camp they choose. He pointed that such camps are beneficial for their children, their homes and eventually their communities; and they would also help to keep the children away from trouble, as they would be fully occupied with positive things that close the door to negativities.

There are also a number of sports camps that will be hosted by numerous organisations in the Federation for those interested in these disciplines, and also various Vacation Bible Schools scheduled to commence sometime next month.
