CHARLESTOWN, Nevis – POLICE on Nevis are investigating the death of a McKnight resident who reportedly died by drowning on Friday (June 1) in the vicinity of Long Point Pier on that island.
Police Press and Public Information Officer, Sergeant Stephen Hector said the drowned man was identified as Glenville ‘Penthouse’ Syder of Lower Fiennes Avenue, McKnight, St. Kitts.
According to reports, Syder and three other men aboard a fishing vessel named Blaze, which was captained by Darwin Francis of St. Paul’s, had left St. Kitts early Friday morning to dive for conch in Nevis.
The men began diving sometime after 8:00 on that fateful morning some 80 feet below the Caribbean Sea.
This media house learnt that Syder had surfaced but encountered some difficulty and had submerged with his weights attached to his body.
Attempts by the vessel’s captain to assist Syder, while he was at the bottom of the Sea, proved futile.
He was later brought to shore and pronounced dead by District Medical Officer Dr. Chandy Jacobs.
Glenville ‘Penthouse’ Syder is survived by his wife and two children.
Syder is the second Kittitian to have died by drowning in Nevis for the year.
On Sunday, April 1, 28-year-old Tasif Nisbett of Cabbage Tree, Cayon was a participant in a boat ride aboard the Irie Lime, and reports suggested that he was making an attempt to board a jet ski from the vessel when he fell into the Caribbean Sea.
Other reports suggested that he was aboard a jet ski with another person who was operating it when he fell into the Sea.
He was reportedly removed from the sea and transported to the Alexandra Hospital where he died around 6:00 p.m.
