Press Release (BVI)

ROADTOWN Tortola BVI, June 5th, 2012   –    In preparation for the BVI Art and Culture Show at London House next month, 14 local artists will host an exhibition this Friday, June 8, to showcase their best work in sculpture, pottery, painting, needle art, batik and a variety of other art forms.

The collection will be launched at an opening ceremony on Friday in the West Atrium of the Central Administration Building at 7p.m., and will remain on display until June 15. Artwork for the July London show will be selected from this collection of work.

According to Director of the BVI London Office Mr. Kedrick Malone, the BVI show is intended to give residents a taste of what is showcased at the art show in July, adding, “The British Virgin Islands is home to a vibrant and diverse community of artists. The goal of the BVI London Office is to expose the works of these talented individuals to the rest of the world, and in particular, the United Kingdom (UK) art market.”

Mr. Malone also encouraged the public to view the exhibit, saying, “Residents should join in with the local artists in what in essence celebrates BVI art and culture. This unique event will bring together the local artists who hope to showcase their work at the London House art show, and it will give the public, for the first time, the opportunity to see the work that is being sent abroad to represent the Territory.”

The upcoming exhibition follows a planning meeting in February this year, where Mr. Malone and 26 BVI artists met to discuss plans to help the artists increase sales of BVI art in the UK.

From that meeting came an artists’ workshop and lecture in early March this year with Art Curator, Ms. Ziggi Golding. Ms. Golding exposed participating artists to new strategies in developing their talent and business skills to prepare them for the UK art market.

For information about the exhibition, persons may contact event organiser Mr. Reuben Vanterpool at 543-8557. In addition, persons can contact the International Affairs Secretariat, under which the BVI London Office operates, via telephone 468-2152.

The upcoming art exhibition is in line with Government’s mandate to offer local artists exposure via the BVI London Office, in addition to the enhancement and promotion of local arts and cultural expressions to develop pride in all residents, which in turn builds a better British Virgin Islands.

The BVI London Office at London House displays BVI art throughout the building and hosts the BVI Art and Culture Show every year since 2004 in commemoration of Territory Day.
