    ROADTOWN Tortola BVI,  June 6th, 2012   -  The BVI Electricity Corporation (BVIEC) is inviting residents to participate in their first annual Energy Conservation Day on Friday, June 8 at the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park beginning at 10:00 am.

     

    The purpose of Energy Conservation Day is to promote the conservation of energy at work and home, according to Deputy General Manager, Mr. Henry Creque.
     
    “We want to make it an annual event because conserving energy is not something that happens overnight,” Mr. Creque explained.
     
    He added, “It is a process and oftentimes it goes very slowly. Usually persons need to change routines that they have been practicing for years in order to see substantial savings.”
     
    During the day’s activities residents can look forward to a brief opening ceremony, displays, give-a-ways and much more. “We will be displaying solar water heating systems and showing how they work compared to electrical water heating systems. We will also be displaying energy efficient lighting and distributing different types of energy efficient lights and recyclable shopping bags,” Mr. Creque told the Department of Information and Public Relations.
     
    Additionally, there will be demonstrations of the amount of money that is spent on energy to perform certain activities within the household and informational material to provide guidance to achieve optimum energy efficiency.
     
    Mr. Henry noted that members of the private sector has also partnered with BVIEC to spread the word of energy conservation.

    “Local businesses such as Road Town Wholesale will participate by giving the public a five percent discount for using recyclable shopping bags to pack their groceries from June 5 to 9.
     
    One Mart Superstore will be providing a $10 voucher to the first 100 persons who shop with recyclable shopping bags between June 5 and 9 and CCT and LIME will be offering double top-up at the Noel Lloyd Park on Friday, June 8,” Mr. Creque noted.
     
    In conclusion Mr. Creque expressed that he would like to see persons come out to the Noel Lloyd Positive Action Movement Park on Friday, June 8 between 10am and 5pm. “We want you to shop, using recyclable shopping bags from the above mentioned establishments to acquire savings, we want you to wear something green and we want you to conserve energy at work and home as we partner to promote energy conservation.”
